doctors andscientists are discovering medical curesand life-saving technologies yourengineers in your architects have builtmodern wonders at Grace your skies anIndian spacecraft have traveled to themoon and to Mars the people of Indiainspire us all, [Applause],this is the first time India has hostedthe Global Entrepreneurship summit it isa symbol of the strength and friendshipbetween our two first prosperity for allI'm proud to say that for the first timeever women make up the majority of the1500 entrepreneurs selected to attendthis summitI see all of you out there only whenwomen are empowered to thrive will ourfamilies our economies and our societiesreach their fullest potentialas a former entrepreneur employer andexecutive in a male-dominated industryI've seen firsthand that all too oftenwomen must do more than their malecounterparts to prove themselves at workwhile also disproportionately caring fortheir families at home after my father'selection I saw an opportunity to leavemy businesses for the privilege ofserving our country and empowering allAmericans to succeed our administrationis advancing policies that enable womento pursue their careers and care fortheir families policies that improveworkforce development and skillstraining and policies that liftgovernment barriers and fuelentrepreneurship so that Americans canturn their dreams into their incrediblelegacies in the last decade women havemade remarkable strides in starting newbusinesses globally between 2014 and2016entrepreneurship activity amongst womenhas increased by 10 percent in theUnited States within the last decade thenumber of women-owned firms has grown by45%,even more promising minority women havestarted nearly 8 and 10 new woman ownedbusinessestoday more than 11 million women in theUnited States own businesses they employnearly nine million workers and generateover a trillion dollars in revenue, [Applause],many women become entrepreneurs and jobcreators out of necessity some weren'tgiven the flexibility they needed atwork to care for their families otherslacked professional sponsors or weren'tgiven a fair shot at a promotion insteadwomen like the many here today arecharting their own courses and achievingincredible feats fueling the growth ofwomen led businesses isn't simply goodfor society it's good for our economyone study estimates that closing thegender entrepreneurship gap worldwidecould grow our global GDP by as much as2 percent the woman in this room canlead the way in closing that gap andushering in a new era of greaterprosperityyet despite the soaring rate of femaleentrepreneurs women still face steepobstacles to starting owning and growingtheir businesses we must ensure womenentrepreneurs have access to capitalaccess to networks and mentors andaccess to equitable laws in developingcountries 70% of women owned small andmedium-sized businesses are deniedaccess to capital the result has been anearly 300 billion dollar annual creditdeficit for women entrepreneurs in thedeveloping world in the United States aHarvard Business Review report foundthat investors asked many questionsabout their potential for games whereasthey asked women questions about theirpotential for loss this could in partexplain why women entrepreneurs receivedless than 3% of venture capital fundingin 2016 we are working hard to reversethis trend the US Small BusinessAdministration for example increasedlending to women by over 500 milliondollars this year alone, [Applause],when it comes to networks and mentorshiproughly half of women in the UnitedStates say they have difficulty findinga mentor yet mentorship is critical tosuccess as each of you knowsentrepreneurs need professional guidanceto help them start and grow theirbusiness in the United States we'refostering mentorship through programssuch as score a nationwide initiativewhere successful men and women coachthose who want to become their own CEOsand when it comes to equitable lawswhile many developed and developingcountries have made tremendous stridesthere's still much work to be done insome countries women are not allowed toown property travel freely or workwithout the consent of their husbands ineven more countries the cultural andfamily pressure is so great that womendo not feel the freedom to work outsideof the home our administration isstriving to promote greater opportunityfor women around the world both throughour domestic reforms and ourinternational initiatives this summer atthe g20 conference the United States wasa founding member of a bold newinitiative with the World Bank the womenentrepreneur finance initiative alsoknown as we bye, [Applause],this facility provides access to capitalnetworks and mentorship for women indeveloping countries we thigh is thefirst facility to support womenentrepreneurs at this scale and weanticipate it will be able to leveragein excess of 1 billion dollars in publicand private financing this facility alsoseeks to address the legal andregulatory barriers that limitopportunities for women entrepreneurs inthe last decade USAID has promotedwomen's entrepreneurship through anumber of programs including providingmicrofinance loans to women inAfghanistan and bringing internet accessto women in Nigeria and Kenya USAIDadministrator mark green is here with ustodaywhere are arecommitted to supporting women and menwho work both inside and outside of thehomewhen women work it creates a uniquemultiplier effect women are more likelythan men to hire other women to givethem access to capital mentorship andnetworks women are also more likely toreinvest their income back into theirfamilies and their communities here inIndia I want to applaud Prime MinisterModi for his firm belief that theprogress of humanity is incompletewithoutjust consider if India closes the laborforce gender gap by half your economycould grow by over a hundred and fiftybillion dollars in the next
